The department of Sociology exists since the inception of the college in the year 1988 and the subjects is being taught as one of the optional subjects under D.U. The pionior teachers of the department were Late Kanak Ch. Deori and Mr. Susil Kr. Gohain who started the course in H.S. level initially. After two years i.e., from 1990-91 session the sociology, course was started to be taught at under graduate level as general course. Then Major course in sociology was introduced from the academic session 1995-96 and since then the subject is in being taught both as general and Major courses. Many a batches of students have successfully passed out from the department. At present there are three regular and one contractual teachers rendering sincere service in both academic and other activities of the department and the college as well.

The facilities of the department are enumerated as follows :

  • Minimum 45% of Marks in the subject of Sociology in H.S. course is entitled to offer Major course subject to the availability of the seats.
  • The department has well furnished class rooms/ halls with specious accommodation.
  • The department has its own collection of text and reference books for the use of teachers and Major course students.
  • The department has a provision to provide admission to one poor but meritorious student from the expense of the departmental teachers.
  • The department provides remedial coaching to academically poor students and extends regular academic counseling to academically advanced learners for further advancement.

Activities :

The department is committed to perform both academic and non-academic activities assiduously. In teaching learning the Lecture method is substantiated by group discussion, class interaction, regular home assignment as a process of self learning, departmental seminars and tutorial for major course students etc. In evaluation the department conducts class test and two sessional examinations and other in semester assessment prior to the start of the End Semester examination. The answer script of class test and sessional examination are timely evaluated with necessary correction and communicated to students and the Marks of individual students are notified in the departmental notice board for their intimation. Moreover, the department has a facility of a separate departmental wall Magazine which is being annually published with writes-up from the students of the department. Apart from these activities the department also involves in other activities including extension work organized by the college from time to time. The department endeavors to make all-round development of the students in the present era of changing time and tide.
